What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a long-term, stable living arrangement that enables eligible participants to live as independently and safely as possible while receiving daily support.
This is not just a form of service—it is also a physical, purpose-built accommodation designed for individuals who require around-the-clock support. These individuals often have complex needs that demand a high level of care and a tailored living environment.
While other supports like personal care, Supported Independent Living (SIL), or assistive technology focus on what assistance is provided, SDA focuses on where that assistance is delivered.
For example, a person living with complex conditions that severely impact mobility, and functional capacity may be eligible for Specialist Disability Accommodation. Unlike respite accommodation. Furthermore, someone experiencing significant functional limitations or require intensive, ongoing support, and meet the eligibility criteria outlined by the NDIS for Specialist Disability Accommodation, are also eligible for SDA funding.
However, not all NDIS participants are eligible for SDA. It is designed for a small percentage of people whose disability significantly impacts their ability to perform daily tasks and who require tailored living environments to maximize their independence and quality of life.
